I’ve had a lot of people asking me what causes breakage, how to fix it, and how to prevent it.
There are numerous things that can cause breakage including: heat, tight hairstyles, rubber bands/hair bows, chemicals, lightener, etc. Breakage is very common! I’ve had clients that are embarrassed to tell me they have breakage, and I want y’all to know that it’s a common thing, and stylists are not here to judge! We are here to help!
One of the most important ways to fix breakage is to get trims. We all know the craziness of having to trim your hair to grow it out ~healthy~. The same applies to breakage. If you let it grow without trimming, it will not be healthy, and will more than likely be noticeable! Having your stylist trim your breakage regularly (about every 4-6 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows) is going to ensure that you are growing healthy hair!
Another way to fix breakage/damaged hair is conditioning treatments. Conditioning treatments are NOT for everyone! These treatments are used to add moisture into the hair. If you have silky, fine hair, you more than likely do NOT need a conditioning treatment. The most common breakage probably comes from heat and lightener. These two things dry your hair out; therefore, adding back in that moisture will build up the hair cuticle, causing your hair to become stronger! Please be aware that ONE treatment may not be very effective. It may take a few treatments before seeing/feeling a change in your hair!
There are many ways to prevent breakage. Avoid tight hairstyles. ALWAYS use heat protectant. I suggest using scrunchies over hairbows. Sleep with your hair down or in a loose braid (not a bun or tight pony tail). Use oil on mids/ends if you have dryness. If you get heavy blonde put in your hair, you more than likely have dryness.
Also, the products you use could cause breakage by not being very effective, or they could have certain chemicals in them that are not good for your hair! Products are very important when it comes to maintenance! If you need advice on good products that are price-friendly, feel free to chat with me.
Please don’t be ashamed or embarrassed if you have breakage. Tell your stylist, and I can assure you, we will help you! Send a chat for more info or any questions you may have.
