Your hair texture is possibly the most important topic to discuss with your stylist when cutting, styling, coloring, perming, and getting treatments. There are different names for these textures, and different kinds of hair textures, but the main three are: fine, medium, and coarse. Each texture is unique and so very beautiful! Let's discuss the difference and what product may help you when styling your texture!

Fine hair tends to have zero texture. It is often called straight, thin, or flat. Fine hair is not always thin. It is possible to have a lot of hair with a fine hair texture, however it may appear thin because of how fine each strand of hair is. Fine hair usually styles straight because of how silky the texture is. Fine hair contains moisture and usually gets oily faster. This moisture is also why it appears so shiny. In order for hair to hold a style, it needs some texture or grip to hold. Therefore, these silky hair strands do not hold a style very well, or possibly at all, without products!
Some products I like to use on my fine hair girls is a stronger hold heat protectant, hairspray, and texture spray. This will not ensure your style will hold for days, but it may at least help to last throughout the day. Fine hair is not always great at holding a style, but it's so beautiful and shiny. It also hardly frizzes or kinks. It is possibly to have wavy or curly hair that is fine! The beauty of hair is everybody is different and there are no rules!

Medium hair is called medium because of obvious reasons. It has medium texture. This hair type is usually wavy, sometimes curly. It can frizz and get a little dry. Since this texture is more dry, it contains more grip. Therefore, medium hair holds a style better than fine hair. Also, it is possible to have medium hair and oily scalp, but it is usually easier to go longer without washing because of the dryer texture medium hair contains. It's also easier to get volume, although depending on how heavy the hair is, the volume may not hold for days.
Medium hair is a great texture to style because it can still look shiny and healthy, but it can also look fuller and hold the style for a longer period of time. It's much easier for a style to hold when it has something to grip to, and medium hair definitely has some grip!
Some products I like to use to style medium hair is heat spray, shine spray, hairspray, leave-in conditioner, and oil. Since medium hair is a bit more dry, it sometimes requires oil on the mids and ends to hydrate and keep the hair healthy and shiny. I sometimes use no hairspray or minimal unless requested because medium hair holds well on most occasions!

Coarse hair is typically very dry. It is usually curly or wavy, but not always. Coarse hair usually holds a style well, but may not appear shiny or silky. This is due to the dry texture of each hair strand!

Grey hair is typically coarse. It is not always, but some people's texture and wave pattern changes due to grey! This is usually a pretty big change for some, and it takes getting use to!
When styling coarse hair, I like to use moisturizing products. Oils, little hairspray, heat protectant, leave-in conditioner, etc. This texture is very dry and can appear dull, but it usually holds a style very well, and is just as beautiful! It can also appear shinier when moisturizing products are used.
This is just a dip in the pond of different textures, products, styles, and information about hair texture! All textures are beautiful and style in their own unique ways! The amazing thing about hair is everybody's is different, and there are no rules! This is also why pricing, coloring, chemical waving, and cutting is so different for everyone! I hope this helped you better understand your hair. As always, contact me or comment any questions!
